Character Info

◎ Character's Name: Tatara Totsuka (western style)
◎ Character's Canon: K Project
◎ Character's Age: 22
◎ Canon Point: Post-death
◎ Background/History: DEAD (Combines both K Project canon and the manga side story: Memory of Red. Neither of the two directly contradict each other, so I'm taking material about Totsuka from both.)

◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? no... if only

◎ Personality:

As K Project takes place after Totsuka dies (really, the entire premise of the conflict stems from his controversial death), his motivations and personality as a character is made apparent by the memories and nostalgia of the people he's left behind. HOMRA, while not the most peaceful clan in Japan, nevertheless goes through a startling change headed by the Red King Mikoto Suoh after Totsuka dies and is not stopped until the Red King's death. At this time, the absence of Totsuka is profound. He's the center of HOMRA in a way the Red King is not, he's the lynchpin that represents both home and security for everyone in HOMRA, and exudes warmth and peace. It's kind of a romantic view of Totsuka, but the minor flashbacks we do get with him show him perfectly at ease with everyone around him, willing to make a spectacle of himself for fun, and kind of silly (also he plays guitar and sings about friendship, c'mong guys).

The canon manga K Project: Memory of Red goes far more into the character of Totsuka Tatara, as it takes place before the anime timeline begins. His influence on HOMRA is far more clear here. And really, what can't be disputed is Totsuka's sincere and genuine affection for his comrades in HOMRA. He's the designated 'welcomee', always taking new members under his wing and getting them settled, and for the most part succeeds quite well. He has the ability to put others at ease with his own easygoing personality and his ability to listen to others in their times of need make him quite popular. He has a gift with others. If the Red King has the sort of awe-inspiring aura that encourages people to follow, then Totsuka Tatara has the aura to set others at ease. He may not be a striking figure, really he's known as HOMRA's weakest executive for a reason, but perhaps it's his 'easygoing??' and 'down-to-earth??' side of him that makes him approachable to all but the most stubborn people. (we're looking at you fushimi). He's always there encouraging King and Kusanagi and remains open and amiable with Fushimi even after the latter leaves HOMRA.

He enjoys going at his own pace and often sweeps other people up at the same time (willingly or otherwise). His favorite phrase is 'It's fine. It'll all work out!' which reveals his inner optimist, as well as his inability to really worry about the things at hand. This means that Totsuka has an awful sense of self-caution, often putting himself into dangerous situations with nary a thought to his own wellbeing. He's not suicidal or a martyr though. He just honestly doesn't really focus on whether or not doing the thing will get him injured or hurt. (good job totsuka) This frequently puts him at odds with the people around him. Even when Fujishima yells at him for going off alone to meet Eric (and catches the knife meant for Totsuka with his bare hands), Totsuka brushes the reprimand aside in order to focus on Eric, finally apologizing to Fujishima once he's finished. But even then, the apology seems to be more for the fact that Fujishima got hurt then for the fact that Totsuka is a moron.

At the same time, Totsuka had an inability to feel truly impassioned with anything when he was young, which is further evidenced by Totsuka's habit of taking up a myriad of hobbies and then abandoning them a few days later. He's the sort of person who tries out all sorts of things with great enthusiasm, but otherwise doesn't make a very strong connection with anything he does. His adoptive father criticizes this aspect about him, chalking it up to Totsuka being cold-hearted. Totsuka's listless view of the world and easygoing personality may have contributed to his seeming 'cold-hearted', but it all changes the day he meets Mikoto Suoh, or King. After that, Totsuka finds himself among people who he loves and cares for, making memories and connections that he's ended up treasuring rather than abandoning out of disinterest.

Nothing about Totsuka is destructive, which may be the reason why he comes off as a pacifist. His Red Clan aura is incredibly weak, making it very hard for Totsuka to use in battle or fighting. Still, his pacifism seems to stem from the idea that the King's power isn't there to fight others, but to protect the people closest to him. He's shown a lack of reserve with violence otherwise, once cheerfully agreeing to 'interrogate' a prisoner on Kusanagi's behalf and never seems to disapprove violence on behalf of HOMRA (unless it's the sort of violence that might get them kicked out or be put at a disadvantage). On the other hand, he's always there to sooth Mikoto Suoh if he loses control, which is probably for the King's health above all else rather than on behalf of their enemies. Despite being respected in HOMRA for his position and experience, Totsuka has a low impression on himself as a whole. He often blames his lack of power when he gets hurt. Above all else, Totsuka has demonstrated initiative and quick-thinking, making up for his lack of power on the front lines by creating plans and convincing others to go through with them. He understands his own weakness best of all, which is probably why he doesn't try to engage in battle and just stands there... even when he's about to die... Partly because he's a moron and partly because he tactfully understands that he can use his weak image to his advantage.

There seems to be very little that visibly frustrates Totsuka. He can get down on himself about his lack of physical fighting power, but usually moves past his own insecurities by accepting his weaknesses long enough to enjoy the present. The only time it visibly bothers him is when his lack of power turns him into a burden, such as forcing his comrades to protect him. Whether or not he's got great self-control on the lid of his temper or that insults and confrontation just generally bounce off of him is unknown. Even when attacked or beaten, he never responds with anger. Even when shot by the Colorless King, Totsuka's first instinct is to feel apologetic to the people he's leaving behind, and not upset at his murderer.

His relationship with the others in Homra are strong, even if he doesn't do them the service of looking out for himself for their sake, but his connection with Mikoto is probably the strongest. After all, Mikoto Suoh was the one who gave Totsuka a purpose. From the moment he saw him, Totsuka had admired him. He had instinctively felt that Mikoto was an existence different from any other and with that, decided to stand by his side when he became the Red King. It gets to the point where Totsuka can be viewed as selfish. He seems to structure his priorities around him. He suggests making Anna a Red Clansman (even though she's ten years old) because he believed she'd be good for Mikoto. He feels ashamed for making that selfish suggestion which shows he's at least partly self-aware, but he doesn't change his mind about Anna. (Though later, it turns out that he wants her a part of the Clan for her own safety as well). As much as he views Mikoto as a friend, Totsuka also understands that there's a distance between them that he can't cross. And he's fine with that, as long as he can stay by his King's side and support him.

◎ Powers/Abilities:

Totsuka possesses the power of the Red Aura, which is basically the ability to manifest flames in order to strengthen himself and incinerate/destroy objects. Unfortunately, Totsuka has the weakest aura out of the clan. This means he is unable to use his power for large-scale attacks, such as for incinerating large objects or using it in battle. However, he's also known to be the best at manipulating his own aura. He can form different shapes with his flames (such as birds or butterflies) and melt things very precisely (like melting the lock of the door without burning the whole thing down). He's also implied to be good at interrogation, where he can use his limited power to 'partially burn' others. He excels at manipulating the aura of his fellow clansmen, often calming their flames down with his weak one.

ABILITIES: Totsuka is basically the walking definition of jack of all trades and master at none. He has so many useless abilities that I can't possibly put them all down, but these are the ones that stick out: photography and video-recording, singing, and composing songs.

(His bucket list of hobbies are as follows: growing bonsai trees, knitting, making home-made udon, sewing kimonos, railway enthusiast (wtf), bird watching, amateur radio, fossil digging, snow sculpting, etc, etc.)

◎ Weapons & Other Special Inventory: his camera, extra roll of film, guitar, bonsai tree, and a picture of HOMRA.

CEREALIA-Specific

◎ Element: Fire. It's his canon element.
◎ Sense: Sight. Totsuka's favorite hobby is photography and taking videos of people, of which he relies completely on his sight to do! He places a lot of importance on records and memories.
◎ Seven Character Traits: (+) kind, open-minded, inventive || (-) selfish, stubborn, irresponsible || carefree

"Ah." Totsuka exhaled a breath as he left the store behind him, his employee uniform hanging limply from his hands.

"I'm fired, I guess?" Anyone passing by would raise an eyebrow at the tone of his voice. He sounded complacent. To Totsuka's credit, he hadn't really been surprised by how things turned out. Working as an assistant at the local aquarium had been very interesting at first, and Totsuka had always liked aquariums, but he started feeling restless as the days in Cerealia stretched by.

He had almost forgotten how that felt like. How monotonous the days could become, how easily he could fall into things and almost as quickly fall out, and how he could take up anything and still feel just the littlest bit empty inside. Totsuka had felt like that all the time as a child, even when he was composing songs on his cheap harmonica and catching beetles in the grass outside, to the point where his step-father had stared at him with sulky resentment and called him --

'You're a cold-hearted child, aren't you.'

Totsuka was no longer a child and his stepfather had never had the ability to hurt him, but he couldn't help thinking back on the words he hadn't remembered ever since meeting King and Kusanagi-san. HOMRA had proved his stepfather wrong. Totsuka had lived in that one place with the same people for so long and never felt tempted to leave. And now --

He folded the uniform carefully between his hands and adjusted the strap of his messenger bag that was threatening to slip from his shoulders. He had to look for another job. That would be fun, Totsuka thought, surely there was something in Cerealia that he never had the opportunity to try. Maybe he could try his hand at ViVID again, even though the first few times had been failures.

Either way, he knew he'd end up doing something, whether it was a new job or ViVID or talking to the others who were misplaced the same as he was. And like that, he'd use up his one-time miracle living the sort of restless, desperate life he turned away from --

But these were the thoughts Totsuka had promised to himself he'd stay away from. Things turned out how they turned out and he couldn't change that at all. The things he could change were the facts that the powerpoint had shown him. That the people he had left behind hadn't survived long enough to lead peaceful lives of their own, and that Totsuka wasn't there to help them during that time. I'm sorry, King -- Totsuka kept on walking, eyes cheerfully trained on the people milling around him and at the advertisements displayed in the shop windows. I couldn't save myself back then, but I can make up for it now.

Even though he wasn't a fighter. Even though he couldn't fight well. Surely, the things he could do would help. He sucked in a breath and laughed to himself.

"It's fine. It'll all work out." The corners of his lips quirked up at the corners. "Somehow."
